Petty Officer 1st Class Thomas Herbert served with the Naval Brigade from HMS Active in the 9th Cape Frontier wars (1877-78) and again in the Zulu war (1879). He was present at the Battle of Inyezane on January 22 1879 and became one of those besieged at Eshowe. Herbert was entitled to the South Africa Medal with the "1877-8-9" clasp. He originally joined the Royal Navy in 1865 and was pensioned in 1891 as a Chief Petty Officer.

Hi All
Thomas Herbert, 1911,1921 census give Bitterne Park Southampton RN Pensioner, Married to Sarah. The 1939 list gives his DOB 1 June 1850 RN Rtd, same address. He Probably dies March Qtr 1940 in Southampton District.
