| Natal Witness 8th February 1879 It now appears that only three of the 54 mounted men from Edendale were killed at the fight at Sandlwana. This speaks a great deal for their horsemanship. Some of them lost their horse and guns. Mr G Shepstone's groom and an interpreter to the surgeon of the camp are missing. The men who have returned have reported to be the reverse of disheartned and have as much confidence as ever in the Europeans.
Julian I checked England's Sons to find their names but, if I'm reading it right, you only have two listed, Klaas Sopela and Ezra Tyingila. Gary did you take a picture of the memorial? |

| By kind permission of 90th What is interesting is the second Witness report above talks of 3 Edendale men killed at iSandlwana and there are three names on the memorial. However looking at Gary's photo's there are indeed three names on there but one, Johannes Moad, was killed on the 4th July 1879 [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |

| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]London Daily Chronicle - Friday 12 March 1880 90th and I visited this memorial 2 months ago and it was still in reasonable condition though the stone work was starting to crack. The church is difficult to find and in a pretty rough neighbourhood. The foundation stone of the church in whose grounds this memorial stands has the date of 1866 inscribed upon it. Interesting to to think they may have worshipped there before they went off to fight. Kate |
