| Hi all thank you for having me, Im trying to find service records for
James Newport (b) 1860 Castle Cary, Somerset He joined up between 1875 and 1884. Mother- Louisa Hunt Father Samuel Newport Snr
1884 he got married and his occupation was put as ex army.
There is no sign of him that i can find in the 1881 census so he could have been abroad at that time.
Really struggling with this one so any help would be gratefully recieved thanks |

| Hi Snowyred Can't find much Military only James Newport 1st Batt Gordon Highlanders attested 15 Aug 1878 discharged 13 Aug 1884 so do not know if this is your man. Did find the following, 1891 census Church Buildings Charlton Horethorne Wincanton, he is a Groom, Married to Jane [b.1859 North Cadbury] 3 Children Arthur 1886, William 1888, Olive 1891. Jane dies Dec Qtr 1898 age 40 in Wincanton District. 1901 Census Sherborne Road, Henstridge, Wincanton, James is now a Coachman Domestic, now married to Louisa [b.1870 Kilmartin] 2 Children William and Elsie b 1893. 1911 census Back Abbey Sherborne, he is a Stud Groom Domestic, M to Louisa 3 children Doris 1906, Gwendoline 1908, Leslie 1911 all born Sherborne. His second wife Louisa dies Dec Qtr 1919 in Sherborne District. Possible death a James Newport is buried Union Chapel Sherborne Dorset but the dates are indecipherable. his son William is a Domestic Stableman at the Rectory Stables, Trent, Sherborne on the 1911 census. His daughter Olive is a Under House Maid to Annie Brury Benthall widow of Kent House Marlborough Road, Bournemouth 1911 census. Rai KLH. |

There seems to be confusion on some sites. I have come up with the following for James Newport, although I cannot find a James born in 1860.
James Newport 1828 - 1885 b. Castle Cary, Somerset, Eng. Husband of Louisa (Hunt) Newport. ( If this is the mother of James b 1860 as you have listed, he is not on this family's list of children. Also the name of the father here is not Samuel, it's James). Married 25 Dec 1859 Castle Cary, Somerset, Eng.
Son of Reuben Newport 1784 - 1851, and Ann, Sparkford, Somerset, Eng.
Father of the following:
No child by the name of James born 1860
William 1867-? Charles 1870-? Harry (1873 - bef 1917) Susan (Newport) Perkins 1875 - 1968 Ellen 1878-? Bessie (Newport) Cook 1882-1969
James died 1885 age about 57 in Wincanton, Somerset, Eng.

It's seem there is a administrative mistake on the site maybe. When did James 1860 pass away?

| Definately some confusion, there James Newport born 1860 was the eldest of nine siblings as confirmed via cross referenced on GRO, Father James Mother Louisa Hunt.
James passed away in 1917 |
