| Try - from his number he would have enlisted in Jan 1876:
THOMAS Evan – Corporal – 25B/793 – 2nd/24th A Company Service details: Enlisted Monmouth, Monmouthshire c.1876 aged 18 years. Appointed Lance/Corporal 28/11/1878. Promoted to Corporal in A Company vice 25B/1440 Mooney Augustus at Rorke’s Drift, Natal, South Africa 23/1/1879. Battalion Orders Rorke’s Drift 27/2/1879 – A Company to occupy No.1 post inlying picquet. Transferred to 46th Foot 35th Brigade Depot Bodmin, Cornwall 2/10/1879. Honours/awards: South Africa Medal 1877-8-9 with clasp 1877-8-9.
Would have been at RD from 23 Jan 79 for 6 weeks after the battle. Papers might be under 35th Bde. From his number would have enlisted Jan 1876. |

| Augustus Mooney is mentioned in another thread. He was out with Lord Chelmsfords column and arrived at Rorke's Drift on 23.01.1879 and stayed there for six weeks. He was promoted to Lance Sergeant ( Corporal) 23.01.1879 at Rorke's Drift, as mentioned above. |

| Hi Kenny I was referring to the Noble 24th reference which I have ordered. I was aware Thomas was not present from the info you kindly shared . As for RD I trained with the great grandson of John Williams VC .I remember over a couple of pints discussing this he said there were letters but they were dispersed within the family, he was a Bridgend lad. Again thanks for your help

| One of the difficulties is that any soldier who did not survive the AZW campaign, his documents were not retained; this was also true of those who served only for a short-period - it was only those who were in receipt of an army pension whose documents were retained. Many of the records therefore on 'Forces Records' have the bear minimal of information and of course contain some inaccuracies as you have observed.
