He served throughout the war, first in the transport service, and subsequently in the remount establishment.
Date of Birth - 29th January 1852. First Appointment - Sub-Lieutenant - Ceylon Rifle Regiment - 30th December 1871 Sub-Lieutenant (Half Pay) - 1st June 1873 Sub-Lieutenant - 56th Regiment - 5th July 1873 Sub-Lieutenant - 27th Regiment - 26th July 1873 Lieutenant - 27th Regiment - 30th December 1873 Captain - Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (1st Battalion) - 18th October 1879 Special Service, South Africa - 1st November 1878 to 10th October 1879 South African War - 1879 - Zulu Campaign. Medal with clasp.

Sale 3016 Lot 103 South Africa 1877-79, one clasp, 1879 (Lieut. J.C. Bayly, 27th Foot.), last letter of name officially corrected, nearly extremely fine, and a unique medal and clasp to the 27th Foot. Estimate £ 700-800 Captain John Cave Bayly entered the 27th Foot as Lieutenant, 1873; served during the Zulu War of 1879 on 'Special Service' with transportation, advanced to Captain later in 1879 and became employed in the Remount Establishment.
