"Samuel Atkings was born in Nottingham and enlisted for the 5th Lancers in July 1878. He transferred to the 17th Lancers for service in South Africa, where he served from February to October 1879, and afterwards in India. He reverted to the 5th Lancers in November 1889 until his discharge in June 1891"
