"Henry Pepperell was born in Kingston, Surrey. A Bricklayer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Engineers at Aldershot on 25 November 1875, aged 18 years. He served in the Cape Province, April-October 1879, serving in the Zulu War, being invalided to England due to enteric fever. Peperell transferred to the Army Reserve in May 1880 and was discharged on 27 February 1888. His service prior to July 1879 was not allowed to reckon towards his good conduct pay and pension as a consequence of having fraudulently enlisted from the Militia"
