"William Walsh enlisted in the 100th Foot in Belfast in November 1875, aged 18 years, but transferred as a Corporal to the 5th Lancers in September 1877. Having then lost his stripes for being absent from the Guard Room, and been embarked for South Africa, he transferred to the 17th Lancers in February 1879. Subsequently present in operations in the Zulu War, including the action at Ulundi (Medal & clasp), Walsh was next embarked for India, where he gained advancement to Sergeant in June 1885. He was finally discharged in the rank of Squadron Sergeant-Major in January 1893;"
