| That's such sad news..i look through his work from time to time, the last time was only a few days ago. Rattray, Gerrard and now Terry, its the ultimate invasion of privacy... to take a life. it reminds us yet again to live each day as if it was the last. if you love someone be sure to let them know over and over again. | Most South Africans must have had someone that they knew personally murdered during the commission of a crime that yielded trivial returns. Most often the criminals prey on their own communities and in busy urban areas, where large numbers of people are no protection, and on farms, where isolation is the key to escape. Given the mushrooming population that is supplemented by refugees from troubled countries elsewhere in Africa, and an unemployment rate of about 30%, the situation can only get worse. You will not discover these facts by tuning in to the BBC World Service, and, if you doubt them, come and live here for a month or two.

| Very sad news indeed.
Also on 30 September Bill Woolmore passed away in Australia aged 85 years. Bill was a life long student of the AZW and ABW and had written books on the Bushveldt Carbineers and Stienaekers Horseman. |

| Hello I have just become a member of the forum and saw this discussion about Terry Sole. My daughter lives in a suburb of Johannesburg and like many suburbs, all the roads in her suburb are blocked off with guards at the only two entries. Everyone is monitored as they come in and out. Not an ideal way to live and this by no means guarantees total safety but has considerably reduced criminal activity in their area. Terry lived on a road just outside the suburb where she lives and, as is mentioned above, this was a totally senseless killing which probably started as a robbery and then got out of hand. | Welcome Audrey.. it's so sad that people have to live like that, the ever present fear of violence, South Africa is undergoing radical change as seen through my outside eyes, i read a lot of the South African press online, frankly its a mess. but i hope things change going forward, you live in such a beautiful country that its a real shame to watch the slide into...whatever it's going to be. i hope Terry's assailants are quickly caught and dealt with. all the best xhosa2000 |

| Living in South Africa, anywhere in Africa for that matter, is certainly a challenge and not for the faint hearted. But its not all doom and gloom there are patches of sunlight starting to shine through once the corrupt and negligent officialdom is put to bed, and it will be, money will be available to start regenerating the economy. That is assuming that the Indian Gupta Family leave some behind of course. But there are lots of positives living behind our high walls, electric fencing, ground beams and bullet proof glass, we can hark back to the days when our rugby team was respected instead of dismissed out of hand, our cricket team could fight tooth and nail with Australia and our Jukskei team was feared throughout the Transvaal. We do count our blessings every day, no silly little buggers on mopeds ripping of pedestrians, no fools wandering around with bottles of acid, and without doubt the blessed feeling that one can go to a music concert without some idiot having fun with his perfectly legal modified automatic weapon. Now if only we had some water in Cape Town I could really enjoy my Whiskey again.

| Sorry that was very much tongue in cheek. We do take precautions but we also have a great lifestyle. A lot of the problems with crime in South Africa stem from the lack of work, huge unemployment, migration, and also from, to a great degree, the restrictions placed on gun ownership. RSA went through the sole searching by the pacifists as is happeneing in the states, that lead to restrictions and the use of weapons. Hell years ago if anyone was on my property they deserved everything they got. You may gather I don't support the ban on guns. |

| In South Africa, it is very easy for 'baddies' to acquire guns, but much more difficult for the majority of the population. Also, the 'baddies' use guns with abandon, but the rest are severely restricted. This imbalance is reflected in crime statistics.

| Hi Brett.
It's the same here in Britain, the criminals seem to be able to get hold of guns at the drop of a hat, whilst others have to go through the mill just to get a licence for a gun, especially a handgun.
There are even restrictions for air rifles and pistols, ie; air rifle 12 ft lbs, air pistol 6 ft lbs, anything with a higher velocity must have a FAC.
I am with Frank on this, I don't support the ban on guns, if the crims have them and others don't, then it makes it easier for the crims. |

| Hi chaps
I am on the other side of the fence on this one, I think the the UKs gun laws are adequate.
Firstly, I'd like to say that I would love to own and fire, say a Colt Army or Navy and to blaze away with my Martini (I must add on a firing range) but the thing I can't get away from is the fact that we do not have a gun culture in the country - not even really in the criminal element.
Yeah, you can pick up an handgun and a few rounds for £75 in Manchester (apparently) and other places but if everyone had fairly easy access to guns wouldn't the place end up like the Wild West (or the USA)? Criminals will always (and have always) be able to get guns....I have read that it was quite bad in the UK just after WW2 with the amount of 'trophy' guns being used in crimes.
The reason that there have been so many terror rated knife is because that is the best they can manage and I would (given the terrible choice) much rather take my chances with someone with a knife than a gun.
For those of you who remember Hungerford & Dunblaine...as far I can remember (I may be wrong) but the perps were perfectly legal gun owner, as a believe are/were most of the mass shooters in the US.
Its probably no surprise that 4 yankee presidents have been shot & killed, Reagan and (according to Wiki) 9 others who were shot (or shot at) and survived...were we have had only one assassinated Prime Minister - and he was stabbed (Ok I can personally name a few more who should have been assassinated but that's another story)
I have a close friend who moved to America and he now has an arsenal in his house (racoons have rabies, he says....Ok I say but do racoons make battalion sized attacks in Idaho)......I have seen him (from the other end) trying to use a cricket bat and that was scary enough.....a now he is armed.
I spose the advantage of the internet (or guns laws) is that I can have an opinion about stuff like this without being shot at.
Cheers

| Morning Simon You have an opinion and I would believe in the context you live its most probably the correct one to have. But picture 4 men using crowbars and sledge hammers to come through your front door and know that your security providers have a twelve minute response time could possibly change your mind a tad. Its pretty close to what happened at my home a number of years ago so the defence of my wife daughter and son tended to over rule the humanitarian aspect of love thy neighbor. But I do fully endorse your opinion. As they say 'different strokes for different folks.'

| Hi Frank,
I appreciate the position (or since I have been on this forum, am starting to learn the position) you are in, in SA and I was mainly defending our gun laws in the UK.
Yeah, you're right, if I stood a chance of being in the scenario, you describe I would be armed to the teeth and the front door mat land mined.
The worst that can happen in Uttoxeter is a bit of sheep rustling....that said there was a farmer, caught some years ago, with a goat.....honestly this is true....the goat was restrained in a cage or box thing......I will leave it to your imagination what was going on but the Policeman who caught him also said he (the farmer) had a mirror set up so he could watch the action......
The goat was female though, so there was nothing 'queer' about the farmer.....and I believe the goat was his own goat.....I have the newspaper clipping which I produce when anyone questions the fact I am an immigrant to the town.....
Cheers
Sime
ps never heard of Jukskei...had to look it up on the internet.....

| Simon haven't laughed so much since the Aussies lost the Ashes................ Interestingly one of my long ago ancestors was sent to the penal colonies for stealing a sheep in Newcastle. The point that Brett and I were making was really that the miscreants at my home were charged with trespassing, two were charged with damage to property. All found guilty and had a twelve month sentence, of which they served 4 months. I had an automatic charge of attempted murder, and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and causing actuall harm ( three of them where wounded)Charges were dropped but I still had to go through the whole trauma of it. Interestingly though I'm now known in the area as the mad bugger that shoots first so haven't had a problem since Just had a recollection of an Aussie going through his driving test and was asked by the examiner if he could make a U turn. He replied: " Ewe turn? Mate I can make the bitches eyes water". Again sorry....................... |

| There is a joke (maybe) in the UK.
If you are worried about burglars, anti social kids or whatever - don't phone the police and complain about them - phone the police and tell them you are armed and going to shoot them......the police react faster....
Fair play to you, Frank (Cape Town's Charles Bronson)
Cheers

| Simon Variations of that joke are told in South Africa, but, in keeping with our more bloodthirsty ways, the shooting is already done and the baddies are all dead. There is an element of wishful thinking in our version. Regards Brett |

| Hello Frank and Sime, Deeply hurt about the Aussie and the "ewe" You may rest assured that was a Kiwi" !!!! As far as firearm ownership is concerned I would hate to have British gun laws here in Oz. We have fairly stringent laws in that area with strict storage regulations. If we were attacked in our home here, and there are home invasions. These are mainly targeted but it can be random, I would not be in a position to defend myself other than by use of one of my antique swords. Pistols require membership of a target club with regular attendance, Un less held on a collector licence. We have not had any shooting massacres like America since the Port Arthur one in 1996. I personally own over 40 firearms mainly vintage and obsolete which I use from time to time. I wouldn't have it any other way, except a little more freedom. My user name says it all. Nitro450 |

| As a post script to the above, I didn't know of Terry Sole and I feel sad that he met his end in this shocking manner. Perhaps if he had been in a position to use a gun to protect himself this topic may not have arisen. I have visited South Africa seven times since 1998 and have noticed the gradual decline in the way itis managed. I have had very little problem in drivingmyself around with my wife. I may still have one more trip in the near future as I love the game animals, scenery and have great admiration for the people both black and white. Nitro 450.
