| Hi All, John C. Day 1939 registry, same address Longford Lane born 10 May 1851 Gen Lab Rtd, widow. Probably born Northleach Gloucestershire 1851. 1911 census Barnwood nr Gloucester, married to Sarah M, 3 children he is a jobbing Gardener. | DAY John – Private – 2-24/1611 (often recorded incorrectly as 25B/1611) – 2nd/24th Born: Birmingham, Warwickshire, England c.1847. Trade: General Labourer. Service details: Served in the Kaffir (sic) & Zulu Wars 1877-8-9. Sent to the Depot for discharge no date. Discharged from the army 18/6/1881. Description: Aged 34 years, height 5’6”, brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, character fair, trade Labourer. Service 16 years 8 months of which he served 1 year 10 months in South Africa. An Injury Assessment Board held at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, London 21/6/1881 confirmed that he was suffering from Bright’s Disease – the result of service and unhealthy climate – will eventually incapacitate. Awarded a permanent pension of 7d per day for life. Intended residence 9 Court, 2 House, Cregoe Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire. CH/88886a. Honours/awards: One Good Conduct Badge. South Africa Medal with clasp 1877-8-9.

Pte W Cooper 2-24/12 Pte G Edwards 25B/922 Pte Dunbar 25B/1421 Pte T Lockett Dmr Hayes and of course CSgt Frank Bourne. |
