Hi all
Question for you all.
On the D.R. Forsyth Medal roll, there are five Royal Engineers listed in the 5th Company as Corporals unpaid with the rank of Gunner.
What is the rank of Gunner within the Royal Engineers?

Andy,
I just wonder if they were trained up as gun crew, the 88th in 9th Cape Frontier War provided infantrymen to be trained as gun crew, likewise for the 80th in the Zulu War.

Andy,
I checked the South Africa Medal Roll for 5th Company Royal Engineers. The five men that Forsyth listed as Gunners are shown under the heading of Sapper. J. Hooper 10528 has the notation "unpaid L. Corporal" above the regimental number. The other four have similar notations. I think Forsyth misread the notation.
I can copy the pages from the medal roll for you, if you like, and email them to you.
