| I present to you another interesting extract from an 1879 Hungarian newspaper. It reads as follows: "Some finer details regarding the Zulu war are just now being discovered. One of the more fascinating ones is the discovery of Cetewayo's storehouse, full of gunpowder. We read the following in an English paper: Sir Garnet just barely set up his camp near Ulundi, it was already brought to his attention that the Zulu king is hiding large amounts of gunpowder somewhere close to the Amayakanzie kraal. The next day, he himself, along with a few of his officers, six members of the Natal Police, as well as a few native guides, set out to search this depot. Around eleven miles from the camp, and barely a mile from he Amayakanzie kraal, where the zulu king had once stayed, they found, under towering rocks, a deep cave, which appeared to be one of the creations of the whimsical wilderness, rather than man-made. They found in the cave around 500 fully loaded powder kegs. These were likely bought from Delagoa Bay, and were purchased from the Portugese.Sir Garnet decided to destroy all the powder; but to avoid the terrible noise which may have caused some confusion along the neighborhood, he bought the kegs to the top of the hill and lit them up there. It was intriguing - shown by our picture, based on a sketch made by one of the officiers who were present at the scene - that just when the English soldiers were about to enter the cave, a big and ugly snake suddenly appeared infront of them, in quite a threatening pose. The beast was shot immediately, but it made quite an impression on the natives, who believed it to be the spirit of their long dead king, Panda (sic, they called Mpande this way consistently), who was guarding the hidden treasures of his son." (Vasárnapi Ujság, 26.10.1879) Is this event -or the existence of the storehouse- mentioned by any other sources? It is an interesting - and a tad bit funny - story, but I would like it even more if it was proven to be true. The original text was a bit challenging to translate, so sorry if anything sounds weird, but I think my translation is sufficient to tell you everything important. (Also, idk what is the best phrase to describe the place in English... gunpowder storage? Gunpowder depot? Something else? ) And there is the link for the aforementioned picture: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] |

| Hobbes,
The story appeared in the British press, in fact The Graphic add an illustration to the story. So what you have is the story simply repeated in the Hungarian press.
