"James Nicholson was born at Warton, Carnforth, in 1855 and attested for the 2/4th Foot at Lancaster on 25th May 1876, aged 21, with previous service in the 1st Royal Lancashire Militia. He served in South Africa from December 1878 to February 1880 and was engaged in the Zulu campaign of 1879. He was discharged at Preston on 19 May 1888.was born at Warton, Carnforth, in 1855 and attested for the 2/4th Foot at Lancaster on 25th May 1876, aged 21, with previous service in the 1st Royal Lancashire Militia. He served in South Africa from December 1878 to February 1880 and was engaged in the Zulu campaign of 1879. He was discharged at Preston on 19 May 1888."
