Today my first Martini Henry Mk II arrived in the mail along with a bayonet/scabbard. Finally. So, I am going to re-watch Zulu & Zulu Dawn while holding my “new” Martini Henry. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]My plan is to give her a very slow and methodical going over and eventually shoot her. We can get black powder charged ammunition here in the states from Buffalo Arms. Fun times ahead. Stand to

I have shot 2 boxes of Buffalo Arms ammo to the tune of $150 a box. I'm very happy with it. I know this sounds crazy but flush barrel with warm soapy water before traditional cleaning. This will neutralize the salt compound in the black powder. I use a funnel and small length of clear flexible tubing from breech to muzzle. Then drive some swabs in and clean normally. Nice Rifle!

That method of cleaning (hot water flushed down bore) is the standard method of cleaning our flintlock rifles and we have used it for years. I follow the hot water flush with a good scrubbing using patches soaked with Ballistol. Easy peasy. Plus the water flushes out the primer hole quite nicely in the flintlocks.

My experience in cleaning back powder rifles after shooting says use soapy solution at first but finsh with boiling water to flush that out. The hot water dries immediately so you can wipe out and oil up and put your Rifle to bed. These days I use a commercial cleaning product "Spray & Wipe" used in household cleaning. Disolves BP fouling on contact. Boiling water after for the reason above although there is nothing in Spray & Wipe to harm a barrel.
