Within an email thread I have with Martin Everritt, he mentioned D.R.Forsyth's South African War Medal book, not having it I went about to purchase a hardback copy. On page 11 it has a copy of a Government notice on deserters (Notice 313 I think) including four 2/24th men. To the side it has "The Natal Government Gazette September 23rd 1879".
Was this publication a newspaper and did they print these notices often? Is it available on-line? The information included is quite useful, age, height description. As well as dates and place of enlistment, desertion, trade and place of birth. Considering the Effects and Credit section of the 2/24th pay-list are sparse at times for their period in Africa this could be a useful addition. Anyone seen these notices before?
