| HAHAHAHAHAHA Kate , I've been to many of those cemeteries , unfortunately at the Old Utrecht cemetery it's mission impossible to read many , if any of the Headstones . In regards to the others I've come across a few of the Chaps listed by Rai , the Cemeteries are certainly on the list , especially the one's at Pietermaritzburg , Newcastle and Utrecht if you haven't been ? , then again Brandyne will also be keen so we'll do them all ! 90th |

| Rai,
On 7 Jun 1879 the Admiralty appointed Lieutenant Henry Bingham Chesshyre Wynyard to HMS Boadicea as an “additional”. On 13 Jun 1879 Wynyard sailed from Plymouth aboard the Union Steamship Roman for the Cape of Good Hope. HMS Boadicea arrived at Simon’s Bay with the body of the Prince Imperial on 15 Jun 1879. “Boadicea” would remain there for the remainder of the Zulu War. On 7 Jul 1879 Wynyard arrived at Simon’s Bay and was transferred to HMS Boadicea. According to the Medical Journal for HMS Boadicea Wynyard was discharged to Royal Naval Hospital, Simon’s Bay the following day. His name is not on the Medal Roll for HMS Boadicea due to the fact that he did not serve aboard that ship during the period for which the crew was entitled to the South Africa Medal (15 March 1879 to 12 June 1879). Wynyard’s name does appear on the Boadicea Memorial at Clayhall Cemetery commemorating all those who died during the ship’s commission on the Cape of Good Hope and West Coast of Africa Station between 1878 and 1882, and not just those who died during the Zulu War.

| Hi Kate Yes I first heard of it early last week , several countries have closed their borders to at least 7 African Countries , and SA is one of them , we've closed our borders today for non Australian residents coming from SA . Hopefully by the time July / August arrives things are much improved , but I doubt it , considering this Omicron strain is reported to be 500% more Virulent than Delta ! . One can only hope that this Strain may blow over quickly . 90th |

I have always wanted to know the burial locations of the Symons brothers they served in the Natal Carbineers and was part of Dartnell force in Mangeni. Of the little research I done they lived on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg

I'm afraid I don't have any further info on the Symons brothers, other than what's in Terry Sole's For God, Queen & Colony i.e. just their first names, sorry.

| Hi Rai The Montgomery you've listed is always confusing , you've listed A.N.( Alexander Nixon ) Montgomery who was in the AZW , it wasn't him who was bitten by the Mamba near Fort Tenedos in 1883 , this was Nathanial Montgomery , not sure if Nathanial has another Christian name ? , who as far as I'm aware wasn't involved in the Zulu War , I've been to A.N.Montgomery's old residence which was Ismont Farm , the family graves including his are on a hill overlooking his / and the current day owners property . 90th |

| Hi All, Within Maitland Cem Cape Town, is a memorial to the children and adults who died between 1841-1915 and were originally buried at Fort Knokke and reinterred at Maitland. Some of these whos gravestones still exist i have already listed under maitland Cemetery. However some family names of the 24th jump out at me, and could be family, C Bromhead, AR Cambrey, WN Cambrey, WP Newberry, SA Sylvester, M and T Hornibrook. It also lists men from the R ART, 4th Lancs, 60th, 2/21, ASC, 24th, 58th and Lonsdale Horse for the period 1875-1879. Fort Knokke was about half a mile from Cape Castle, on the seafront near Woodstock Railway Station, it has been swallowed up by modern development. It would seem that the 1/24 and families were here from 1875 before moving north. Zulu War Memorial St John's Cemetery Pinetown. 4th Royal Lanc's Regt Memorial, Old Cemetery Utrecht. Zulu War Memorial. Kwa Dukusa Old Cemetery Stanger. Those who died at Herwen Military Hospital. Bronkhorstspruit Battlefield Memorial, Bronkhorstspruit, includes individual memorials to Commissary Carter, Lt-Col Anstruther, Captains Nairne and Macswinney and Lieutenant Harrison all 94th. Defence of Marabastad Fort 1880-81 Memorial, Marabastad. Sgt Robert Anderson 58th KIA Laing's Nek 28 Jan 1881, Fort Napier Cemetery PMBurg. | I have read all the articles re the Grave Memorials with great interest. My great Uncle 186 Trooper William Fletcher was a member of the Natal Mounted Police KIA at Isandlwana 22/1/1879. I understood that in accordance with army tradition he was buried on the battlefield and is listed on the Memorial erected in 1913 by ex-members and members of the NMP and NP of which I have colour copies showing the memorial and his inclusion. I wonder if someone could confirm my assumption re his place of burial is correct or if he may be buried elsewhere in one of the other grave sites although he is not listed in any of the information currently supplied by Rai KLH. | Hi Luke The memorial is not a headstone or a grave marker. Lower down the slope, to the east, is the Colonial Cemetery I would say that area, it has a number of cairns, is the most likely resting place of Trooper Fletcher. We dont, and never will, know exactly who is buried under the various mounds. There is also the possibility that Trooper Fletcher managed to fight his way over the saddle in which case he could be anywhere from iSandlwana to the Buffalo river. Its a question you pose that Im afraid will never be answered. Frank |

| Hi Aussie, If you have not looked at the records for the churchyard of the Anglican Church in Karkkloof, for Symons, suggest you start there. This place is NE of Pietrmaritzburg near Ottos Bluff, near which most of the Carbs were farming and originated.
regards
