Subject: Renamed medals? Sun Mar 27, 2022 7:53 pm
Can anyone help me please ? I have recently purchased a South Africa service medal with a 1879 clasp. I have been told it has probably been renamed or re- engraved. Why is this a problem to the value if the medal is genuine? Forgive my ignorance!! Thanks A

Hi Alfie Renamed medals aren't worth much at all , I for one wouldn't buy a medal if it was renamed etc , it might be that the person on the engraving wasn't even in SA , or in the Military at the time , the medal was issued to those who appeared on the Military or Regimental Rolls of the said Regiments and Units in SA at the time , not produced or Engraved by any Tom Dick and Harry . Hopefully Peter Weedon see's this post , I'm sure he'll be able to add more to your question . 90th

Thank you - I do have the full Military records (kindly sent to me by a member of this forum,) of the person so I know the name and regiment are genuine. I think it adds to the medal's story but it seems that no one else does !

Good for you Alfie , but yes , no-one that I'm aware of thinks a re-named medal adds anything to it's interest . 90th
