Subject: Philip Robert Anstruther 94th DOW 1880 Sat May 09, 2020 11:03 am
Lt Col PR Anstruther who Died of his Wounds after the Battle at Bronkhorst Spruit on 20 December 1880, during the First Boer War, having served in the Zulu War. Interestingly on his Memorial at Kilrenny Churchyard nr Thirdport Fife, the following is stated Killed at Bronkerspruit South Africa and buried here December 1880. Well the question is, the date is when he died obviously and no way could the family have had the body returned in such a short time, however did the family have his body returned at a later date and the dates are wrong, they were a well off family so money was not a problem. And is this another body returning to the UK after the Zulu/1st Boer War. I found a picture of the memorial on the website deceasedonline.com so cannot post it, however it might be online elsewhere. All keep safe Rai Keynshamlighthorse.

There is a photo on the findagrave website, previously to what i said, the memorial reads buried there not buried here. So the body was not returned. Rai KLH

Is it fair too assume the memorial is located at the battlefield?

Frank,
I was up in that neck of the woods a few years ago with a National Guide, rather than a battlefields guide. She was in commentary mode and announced that we were approaching Bronkhorst Spruit, so my ears pricked up to listen to the tale of the infamous 1880 action, but not a bit of it! Apparently Bronkhorst Spruit's claim to fame is having the largest Buddhist temple - the Nan Hua Temple - in the Continent of Africa. Not a lot of people know that!
