Ciroferrara,
I would recommend Robert Hope’s book. There are two editions of the work, the second edition is the expanded version.
A very in-depth study of the 80th (Staffordshire Volunteers) Regiment during its service in South Africa.

That's really interesting to hear. What are the illustrations like? Anything unusual? Cheers

Hi Ciro I'm not sure as I've got 100's of books , Papers & Journals etc on the AZW , so I can't really tell you what's unusual or not , I suppose it depends on the volume of items you have , or have seen ? . I'm away for the weekend so I can't have a browse . 90th

Most of the illustrations you will already find in various other AZW publications, a fair number from the Illustrated London News and other papers of the time. Some portraits of the notable men of the 80th Regt. and a number of photographs of the battlefields/monuments.
There are illustrations on 90+ pages so you get a fair few. As said above. highly recommended.

A lot of Hope's research on 80th soldiers who appear on the ZW Memorial Gates at Lichfield Cathedral is incorrect. If you look at Paul Bryant Quinn's essay in vol. III of my Studies in the Zulu War you will find these corrected in the footnotes. I carried out this research for Paul and allowed him to use it. In addition Robert published my incomplete research on the IMI in this book. Much is incorrectly copied. I shall be publishing the complete research in a subsequent edition of Studies in the Zulu War. It will be co-authored with a forum member.

Its a good book Cirroferrara. With the sheer amount of information there will be the odd mistake but then everyone who writes about this campaign makes them so I wouldn't let Julian's comments put you off. I think Robert has done a smashing job. If we didn't buy books because there were mistakes in them our bookshelves would be empty. Try and get the bigger second edition ISBN 1-904546-08-0 if you can. There are some lovely photographs and if your AZW library is limited you may not have seen many of them.
