Subject: Visiting Brecon Sept 19-21 Sat Sep 03, 2022 5:17 am
I'm a brand new member who lives in Washington State, USA, and wanted to start off by mentioning that I will be arriving in Brecon early afternoon of Monday, Sept. 19 and will leave Wednesday morning the 21st and I hope to meet at least one Brecon-area member.
Anyone who has a copy of David Jackson's "Hill of the Sphinx" can see four or so of my photographs David used, including the panorama of the view from the firing line. In 1993 he gave me a map showing where he wanted me to stand in order to get some images, particularly the view from the firing line where the broad depression comes into view as he wanted to see how large the area is that would have been out of view had the firing line not gone out as far as they did.
I will be staying at the Borderers Guesthouse just down the street from the museum if anyone nearby wants to leave a message. I may take a trip of several hours the next morning to go down to Rhodda and back which won't take long, but I will certainly be in Brecon on the afternoon and evenings of both Monday and Tuesday.

Hi Bob and welcome to the forum. I have to admit I did a double take when I saw your name pop up. Instantly recognisable from "Hill of the Sphinx". Frank

Hello Bob,
Unfortunately you are there a week too early for me.
I will be in Brecon on 28th-29th September for a planning meeting for the Zulu Dinner taking place in October.
Enjoy your visit.

Hi Bob Can I ask why you are visiting the Rhondda on your trip? I ask because there is a post on here this morning about Stanley Bakers birth place in Ferndale with information you may find interesting.
I will be driving to Brecon from Cardiff on a Monday and apparently the Rhondda Heritage Museum is closed on Mondays so I will have to backtrack the next day. That may be okay for if it were open on Mondays I would have a full day for a short drive - Caerleon, Caerphilly, etc. I will go into Ferndale on my morning trip Tuesday,
I'm flattered that you recalled my name -- you must read the photo captions every day in order to remember something like that.
David met me at Heathrow upon my return where we sat and talked for several hours and where I gave him the photographs I took.
It was a pretty good trip - stayed with David Rattray at his Fugitives Drift Lodge, and hiked from the battlefield following the Fugitive's Route, accompanied by his man Satchmo. It was an interesting are where word gets around -- I was on this trip with an Australian friend staying in Dundee prior to going to Rattray's place and on the road returning from Blood River Battlefield we wrecked our car in a roll-over into the Klip River donga. Our replacement car arrived the next morning - when we got to Rattray's place he had already heard of our accident because he was in Dundee and heard it from the man who developed my photographs.
