| 19 year old Ordinary Seaman Henry George Hayden deserted ship on 1 April 1879 according to the last entry on his service record, just 9 days after HMS Active had returned to Simon's Bay from Natal. His name does not appear on the Medal Roll for HMS Active, indicating he was not entitled to the South Africa Medal. The naval authorities at the time of his capture would have been Commodore Richards. I have not been able to find Hayden's final disposition.

| Hi All A Henry Hayden appears on the 1891 and 1901 census living at Spring St Portsmouth born circa 1840/43 Portsmouth, a Labourer M to Emily, His death record gives the same address age 62 when he died on 26 March 1903 [would give 1841 birth date] he was buried at St Mary's Portsea. Not 100% that this is our man. Rai KLH |
