The easy answer is speed ! , he wanted to get there quickly , he didnt have time to pack the camp , especially at 2.30 am or thereabouts in the dark , which was I think when he received the message . 90th

Dartnell was not in danger, he demanded only white troops to attack the Zulu in front of him! LC could join with all his troops ...

LC was afraid the zulu's would move , he wanted to hit them quickly and hard , he couldnt do that if he's taking the whole column with him ! . 90th.

And then, if the Zulus had come, it would have been to attack the complet troops of the camp on the march! LC would have had his decisive battle and in much better conditions than those of Isandhlwana !

Hi Rascal . I still find it hard to accept that the zulu wasnt more proactive and attempted to fight the slow moving columns , I think that would've been there ONLY chance of success . Then again they did try it at Inyezane with no success ! The success would probably been only short lived , but many more troops would've died . 90th

Some of them were crossing the river as they were moving in two divisions . The Gatling gun was in the second division and had to be rushed forward from memory. 90th

Oh! In the past you had told me that some soldiers were bathing in the river when the NNC discovered the Zulu!

In all cases, they had to return to the shore all speed to dress without dry ...
When you're naked in a river and you're told that impis arrive, you must beat them speed records in swimming and running:D
