I'd say at this moment in time 135 yrs ago , which is currently 12.08 pm in old Zululand things were certainly starting to happen , Durnford is possibly on his way back from his surprise encounter with the left horn , if not ,  he's soon going to run into it !.

Morning 90th
Your times are out. Its now 11:47 in SA, using Keith Smiths Essay Durnford would have met up with the two Carbineers around about now and the Left horn in a few minutes time.

Cheers

The battle is virtually over, the fugitives still going down the trail. Possibly Anstey still fighting on the Manzimyama.
Chard busy writing letters in his tent, Reynolds, Smith climbing the hill. Rorkes Drift men having a nap after eating lunch.
Melvill and Coghill about to cross the Mzinyathi at Fugitives Drift.

"Rorke's Drift Anniversary honour roll.
Whilst going through some family papers yesterday I found the following Rorke's Drift honour roll in a publication by the Mercury Press.
Being the anniversary of the epic battle I thought it appropriate to circulate it. Interestingly, it lists Adendorf and two Jenkins as defenders, amongst many others often discussed.
According to the text it is Chard's roll and its publication has been approved by the "Lt General".

Barry, it states "By an Eyewitness" does it say who. Or does it mean John Chard?

HI Impi,
Good to hear from you, and a good question too.
The front cover of the booklet does not identify the author and reading it through I did not manage to establish who the author was either, although Chard seems to have had many inputs, as at the end of the booklet he signs off certifying that the information contained therein is true and correct. Of importance I think is the listing of those contentious defenders names and will be of interest to many.

Is this the "Smith roll" as Whybra calls it?
It was compiled days after the defence and latterly used by Chard (Cantwell)  decades later to compile what we now know as the "Chard roll."

Now, assembly, year 7. impi - go teach.

The 'Chard' roll as its so called was written, dated and address to Richard Glyn on the 3rd February 1879. The numbering of the people that took part is exactly the same as the numbering in the Smith account posted by Barry. The list was originally published in the Natal papers on the 8th of February. George Smiths account and list was published on 7th April. The pamphlet was published as a commemorative item in January 1880. The so called Cantwell roll only appeared in around 1930. The fact that this self same list, with the same numbering was published twice by Natal papers, in 1879 and 1880 proves that the Cantwell list is a copy of an original from 1879 and not made up by him in the 1930s.
So on a time line:
There was a list made on 3rd February 1879 for Richard Glynn
This same list was printed on the 8th February
This same list was printed again in January 1880
This same list was then reprinted by 'Cantwell' in 1930.

The lists all have a common denominator reaching back to February 1879 except:

Bourne. He made up a list in 1910 from memory. Not suprising really that 31 years down the line he made some mistakes and let people of.
In 1937 Bourne revisited his roll and compared it with the original.

As to the original list from Feb 1879: Chard wasn't part of the regiment so would have had great difficulty putting down all the names. Although involved in it some one else with that knowledge would have been the compiler. Bourne never mentioned it. It would have been out of the scope for Dalton or Reynolds, again they didn't know the regiment. Bromhead would be the obvious choice but the descriptions from Clery in his letters tends to show him and Chard as classic Stress sufferers. Who else was there with clerical abilities and a rank sufficient to get co operation? My money is firmly on G W Maybin. But with the help of some one that wasn't busy on regimental duties, George Smith.

Cheers

Hope that helps.

Great theory as to Maybin's involvement, very intersting, thanks.

In regards to Bromhead, I am not sure I would be inclined to believe everything that Clery said about him (and Chard). Bromhead had just lead his men in the defence of the mission station for several hours, I am not sure if a little clerical work would have phased/stressed him after that.

Also, isn't the list of Feb 1879 you refer to sometimes called Chard's "first report?" In this report, he does not name names, but merely states the number of men present? Such as 1/24th - 11 men.

Happy to be corrected, you know far more than I do on this topic.

I will dig out the Clery letter I refer to. It wasn't so much a report that phased Bromhead as, I believe. he was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress. I will try and post the letter over the weekend. The original report would have contained the names of all present, Its from THAT report all the others sprung. Proof of the existence of such a list is as my last post. If one affirms that there was no list produced by Chard then you have to credit Smith with drawing up the original list as it was published in the Natal papers under his name. But Im sure that Smith copied Chard not the other way around.

Cheers

Putting oneself in Chard's position (just commanded the defence for hours on end, exhausted, don't know the names of the vast majority of men I'd just fought with) who better to delegate the task of going around to see and chat to all the men who had just fought tooth and nail, than the Rev Smith?

PostSubject: The Defence of Rorkes Drift, anniversary booklet   drift - 22nd January 1879 135th Anniversary. EmptyMon Jan 27, 2014 5:04 am

Hi Springbok9,
I have been comparing the wording in the first section ( there are 4) of the booklet and very much agree that the general report ( section 1)  was authored by Rev Smith, the  vicar of Estcourt.  The similarity between those words and a diary attributed to him are just too similar to be a coincidence. So, whoever wrote it was definitely there too, ie none other than Rev  Smith.
However , Smith details the  strategies of the three 1000 man Zulu reserve regiments  which  came to "do" Rorkes Drift, and that information must have been fed to him by someone else.  Interestingly out of that section we learn that whilst marching from the Nek at Isandlwana, where they assembled prior to the march to RD,  these regiments were attacking stragglers and survivors of Isandlwana. That partially answers the question where the MH's supposed to have been used to fire on RD came from.
One error that I see in his report was the time of arrival of Chelmsford's relief column, Smith puts it at about 08h00, but in reality it was just after daybreak, ie about 06h00.
The other sections of the booklet contain the list of defenders ( section 2) .  Section 3 is a brief summary of the RD action by Chard, and section 4 is a 10 stanza  poem which is attributed to "Truth" and dated February 20th.
Stanza 1  reads;

Just as the light was failing,
And the day was lost in night,
A little band of heroes
 Comes hastening from the fight,
"to the Ford!" has been the password
 That has nerved them as they fought;
And to hold the Ford 'gainst fire and sword
 Is now their only thought!

Morning Barry
Yeah pretty sure it was Smith. the same article was published shortly after the battle as well. Have to admit I haven't read the section on the invading impi, but yes hes obviously collected info from different sources. And that must have been from a Zulu involved in the pursuit, non of the Fugitives really knew who was chasing them.
The times of his arrival are a bit uncertain. Its pretty well documented that he left iSandlwana at first light, around 3.0 to 4. Its then 12 miles to RD, even going the bridle route, could they do that in 2 to 3 hours?

Cheers mate
