From the pictures I've seen from the time of 1879 around Isandlwana where there is basically nothing , I'd be fairly certain it'd be similar ( Fugitives Drift ). Although along the banks of the river itself it may've been different .
Ian Knight has mentioned that the majority of the scrub, bush etc has really taken off within the last 30 years or so , when he first started going there , it was a lot less than nowadays .

The two early photos taken from behind the M and C memorial show there was virtually no growth on the hills. I have photos, virtually on an annual basis that shows the growth along the river, ten years ago there was nothing at all now its pretty damned thick.
