Gloucestershire Echo - Monday 18 January 1937

Could this William Taylor be the Colour Sergeant 847 William Taylor  of the 2nd 24th?

There does not appear to be a soldier who served with 24th in AZW who fits this newspaper report. If he joined 24th in August 1876 he would have had a number circa 25B/800. Also the Guard of Honour for the Prince Imperial I recall was provided by 2/24th.

Julian Whybra has researched those attached the Mounted Infantry.

90th

It cannot be CSgt Wm Taylor C Company, 2/24th - his number 2-24/847 was issued in c1857 about the time the 2nd Battalion was re-raised. I suspect that as he received LS&GC in 1880 after 18 years adult service - the likelihood he was 18 in 1862 and therefore joined at age 14 years - and would have been born in c1844. So we are searching for a Taylor who is recorded on the medal roll under another first name OR an alias (about 10% of soldiers).
