Isandlwana survivor? Newcastle Mounted Rifles Empty
PostSubject: Isandlwana survivor? Newcastle Mounted Rifles   Isandlwana survivor? Newcastle Mounted Rifles EmptyThu Feb 06, 2020 6:09 pm

I have a acquired a pair of medals as follows:

- SAGS 1853 to Sjt. J. Brown, 45th Regiment and
- SAGS 1879 clasp to Tpr Brown, Newcastle Mounted Rifles

I'm sure these are to the same man, John Brown, who was born in 1826 making him in his mid 20's during the Kafir Wars and then a mature 53 at the time of the Zulu War.

My question is, however, was he one of the survivors of Isandlwana (where 7 of his comrades perished)? Is there a roll of those from the NMR who were there?

Regards

Rory

Evening Rory,

There is an NMR Isandlwana survivor with the surname Brown recorded - neither the Dutton medal roll nor Terry Sole's For God, Queen & Colony offer an initial, although Julian Whybra's England's Sons has him as  Thomas.

Regards,

Tim

I doubt it's the same chap , for a start J.Whybra has his Christian name as Thomas , and being a Sgt initial (J ) in 1853 you'd certainly think he would possibly have that same rank in a Volunteer Unit ? .

I think it unlikely. Brown is a common name.

Thank you for your input gentlemen - Mr Brown will remain semi-anonymous for the moment - still a nice medal to have to a survivor of Isandlwana - there weren't many of them left.

I can assure you he is not a member of the 'Staffordshire' Browns - we are natural cowards......at the first sign of strife - we historically have headed for the coal mines and deferred service..... Very Happy
