Hi Everyone, and thank you for letting me register. I am writing about the psychological drivers of morale and motivation of soldiers (and sailors/marines) involved at the siege of Eshowe. I would be most grateful for any pointers towards resources like letters or memoirs that refer to the siege. Thanks for your time-what a fascinating site!

Firstly welcome to the forum.

Yes thanks, that sort of thing is very useful, and I am grateful for your time and trouble, I am currently looking for a copy of a letter by a R.E. Sapper, Tom Cullern who wrote home to his father in Monmouth. The newspaper mentioned in Emery's 'Red Soldier' does not seem to exist. (The South Wales Daily Telegram. Thanks again and sorry for delay in replying...

Blackcat,
Have you read The Zulu War. With Colonel Pearson at Ekowe. By One Who Was There. published in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, No. DCCLXV, Volume CXXVI, July 1879 pages 1 - 29? Thought to be the work of the then Captain Edmund Leopold Clarke, (later Pelly-Clarke) 103rd (Royal Bombay Fusiliers) Regiment.
It is a fairly in-depth assessment of the siege. I have it as an original piece but the binding is very tight, making it awkward to copy.
