Hi all just noticed tonight three Zulu war medals on eBay as follows Medal to Pte J. Foster 57th foot Middlesex regiment has 1879 clasp £875
Medal to, J.Pitman AB HMS Shah, has a copy clasp and suspension £495
Medal to, 3272 Seargent major P.O'connor Lt Horse 1877-78-79 clasp renamed medal £135 bidding still open. Just wondered if these were legitimate medals, I don't trust eBay much fir this type of thing.

I will only comment on the J. Pitman medal. I am confident the medal is legitimate. The engraving style on the medal is correct for those issued to the men of HMS Shah. This medal has been up for sale at least twice before. One of the sellers was Jager Medals & Militaria who is a reputable dealer and a member of this forum. Pitman (Pittman) served with the Naval Brigade contingent from HMS Shah, and most likely served at the Battle of Gingindlovu. At some point the disc had a pin attached and was converted into broach causing minor damage to the obverse side of the medal resulting in the lower asking price.

Thank you petty officer tom, very informative reply, I'm not in the market for any of the medals but I do take an interest in those that are for sale as to whether they are fake or genuine.

Danny1960 Re named medals aren't worth very much at all , stay clear of them , brooched medals certainly lose some of their value . I haven't seen the Foster 57th Medal so can't comment . 90th

I dont recommend buying medals from Ebay. Some of the medal dealers do advertise on there but you will also find them on their websites for less money. Damaged , renamed or defective medals can be interesting from a research perspective as long as their condition is reflected in the price.
