As was reported on many occasions (eg Mangeni Heights) that “Zulu campfires could be seen”. I was interested to understand how the Zulus started them?

I would suggest the age-old rubbing sticks together solution.

Hi John/younghusband

I should imagine they would have been able to purchase through people such as traders before the war, or may have used actual flint.

I have come across this in The Aberystwyth Observer
14th June 1879, Marionethshire News:

Zulus have a regular symbolic language of grass fires, and by this means convey messages from one part of the county to the other. Private signals are also made among the natives by tying grass into knots of different shape, which would pass unnoticed by the ordinary Observer.
