| "Captain and Quartermaster J Stead, of Army Service Corps, doing duty at Dublin, has retired from the army. He served nearly 18 years in the ranks, and was given a commision as Sub-Assistant Commissary in the old Commissariat and Transport Department in 1878. and became Quartermaster in 1880, Capt Stead saw active service in the Zulu war." Dublin Daily Express - Saturday 10 June 1893
Performed general transport duty along the lines of communication. Mac and Shad p362

| Hi All, Joseph Stead Born 9 Dec 1841 St George Ramsgate, Baptised 9 Jan 1842 Christchurch Ramsgate. Royal Engineers to ASC abt 1878, 1861 Army Register, No.6390 Driver RE, On 3 Oct 1864 he marries Ann Holladay Christchurch Ramsgate, he is a Corporal RE stationed South Camp Aldershot, by the 1871 Army Reg he is a Sgt 'A' Troop RE Train at Aldershot. 1881 census Colewort Barracks Portsea, he is QM C + T Staff, a widow with three young children between 4 and 10, he remarries Mary Moran who would die in Barbados in 1896. To Pension Hon Capt ASC 1 Aug 1893. He dies Oct 1940 in Guildford District. I found his second wife on the findagrave website, her gravestone mentions him. | Hi Again, I think his first wife Ann Stead [nee Holladay] was buried 4 Feb 1880 at St Laurence in Thanet, St Lawrence, Ramsgate. She was only 34. Rai KLH |
