"LOVE AFFAIR: . . New York Saturday. Thomas Conner, a sergeant in the 18th (British) Hussars, landed in this city, yesterday on the steamship Queen. Connar fought in the Soudan campaign and the Zulu war; he wears medals for bravery. has a clasp for African service, and a gold medal for service in the Soudan. It appears that he was in love with a young lady of Dublin, and two weeks ago met her in company with another man whereupon Conner " sailed in " and "wiped the sidewalk "with his rival. The sergeant then ran to the barracks, changed his clothes, and sailed for this country on board the Queen. So soon as he arrived here Connor went to the Recruiting Office, renounced his allegiance to Great Britain, and enlisted in the United States Army.—Delziel."
