"At the West Ham Police Court, on Thursday, Mrs. Kate Maryon, of 18 Charlton-road, Plaistow, said that her husband, James George Maryon, a stoker, left home on the 18th inst., and had not since been heard of. When he left home he said be was going to assist in the unloading of a barge at Bromley. Her husband is thirty-seven years of age, 5ft. 7 and a half in. high, and has fair complexion, blue eyes, auburn hair, whiskers, beard, and light moustache. He had been in the navy, and has a sabre cut on his forehead received during the Zulu war. When last seen he was wearing a dark tweed coat and vest, corduroy trousers, blue cloth cap, blue cotton shirt, gray flannelette undershirt, and lace-up boots."

Stoker James George Mason is not on the medal roll for any ship that served in the Zulu War. His service record shows he was aboard HMS Blanche from 1877 - 1881 in the West Indies.

Does make you wonder then Tom if he spun the Zulu war 'sabre cut' heroic yarn about his injury to his wife and it was actually recieved under less glamerous circumstances. A drunken fall perhaps or a bar room brawl.
