| Hello, having recently coming across my late fathers military collection. I came across a Zulu medal along with a file of research for Pte it was awarded to. My father was an avid collector and spent hours researching etc, I'm no expert nor do I really know what I am looking for . I would really like to find out if Pte 515 J .White 2/24 was at the R.D? I have a file of research to decipher and if anyone could help me , that would be great. |

| The answer to your specific query, he was most likely out with Lord Chelmsford on 22/23 January 1879 when all the action took place, but then was based at RD with the rest of 2nd Battalion for the next 6 weeks. |

| Hi Probably the most authorative list of men at Rorkes Drift is in Julian Whybra's 'England Sons'. He has a JAS WHITE 25B/1132. C COMPANY 2/24TH On the plaque at Brecon Cathedral is a J.WHite KIA at iSandlwana. So in answer to your Question he was'nt at Rorkes Drift but died at iSandlwana. The Nobel 24th lists James White 25B 1132 Enlisted 3/2/1877 Served in C Company. No trace of a clim made for his effects. South Africa medal with clasp 1877-78-79 As your medal is now an iSandlwana named casualty the value would increase, I would imagine, quite dramatically.
I hope that helps.

| Frank,
You might have confused matters - the query was about 25B/515 - an Irishman. Who was not at RD nor Isandlwana on 22/23 January 1879. |

| Rach Apologies for lateness. Been away. For what's it's worth Kenny was quite right. 515 was NOT at RD or Isandhlwana and can only have been with Chelmsford's Reconnaissance on the morning of the 22nd. WHITE James – Private – 25B/515 – 2nd/24th Home service 9/12/1874 – 31/1/1878. Served South Africa 1/2/1878 – 12/1/1880. Arrived at Casemate Barracks Gibraltar in the Mediterranean 13/1/1880 aboard H.M.S.Orontes and served there until 11/8/1880. Served in India 12/8/1880 – 10/2/1892. Home service 11/2/1892 – 8/1/1895. Discharged 8/1/1895 total service 21 years finishing up a lance-sergeant. Honours/awards: South Africa Medal with clasp 1877-8-9 and probably the IGS and LSGC too.
