Yes he did take part in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879/

He was Private 29B/1812 Joe Robinson, 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment.

Joseph Robinson enlisted 9 April 1878 age 18, born South Molton Devon 1860. To 34Brig/1395, transferred 29/1812 58 Regt 20 Feb 1879, to S Africa on the SS Russia, 26 Feb 1879, Natal 4 April 1879, Transvaal 11 Jan 1880, PMBurg Hospital 20 Aug 1882, to Cape Town 12 Dec 1883, PMBurg 25 May 1884, to Rorke's Drift 8 July 1884, in Hospital at R Drift for Tonsilitis 21 March 1885 to 5 April 1885, served Zulu and First Boer Wars. Discharged 10 April 1890 12yrs. Married Ellen Jury 10 Oct 1891 in Chulmleigh Devon. 1901, 1911, 1921 census address Chulmleigh, he is a Woodman on an Estate.
Probably dies Dec Qtr 1937 Barnstaple District, [includes Chulmleigh].
