Crewe Chronicle - Saturday 01 June 1935

The surname is spelt two different ways in the newspaper article and there is a Sergeant Instructor of Musketry1512 J Hampson 1879 clasp.
However this is a Private 2428 H Hampton Dutton's 1879 clasp.

Question for any medal experts shouldn't he have the 1877-78-79 clasp bearing in mind his service?

The dates are obviously wrong in the newspaper report. The 2nd/21st fought against Sekhukhune of the baPedi in 1879, rather than 1877.

The Battle of Zwart Kopje took place on 6th January 1881 during the 1st Boer War. “Captain Sampson” was actually Aubrey Wools-Sampson.

Neither of the 21st’s regimental histories I have mention the battle or any awards for it.

"L/Cpl Henry Hampton: In the course of the defence of Pretoria, an action occurred on 6 January 1881 at Zwart Kopje, approximately 19 kilometres from Pretoria. During this engagement Capt Sampson was seriously wounded in the neck and shoulder. L/Cpl Hampton, who had, immediately prior to this, been conspicuous for the manner in which he had led his small party of Fusiliers, carried Capt Sampson out of action and across the river, under heavy fire."
