| After looking at the service record I found (see below) and unless I'm missing something he didn't take part on either of these campaigns. He has no medals or decorations shown on his record and did not join until 1886. | Hi, the obit is for my 2x great grandfather b. 1857 in Bothwell, however the service record is for another Edward Croal(l) B. 1863 in Glasgow. The surname is misspelled all over the place so I have yet to track down his actual service record myself - it could be anything from Crow, Croy, Coyle to Cro(a)l(l)! |

| Hi Rai,
Thank you for this. Yes, they're all from Coatbridge/Old Monkland and the surrounds in Lanark and that's where I have them in 1871 too :)
I do have a more info on the family, just can't find the service record. For Edward, his birth is registered under Croy in Bothwell (REF: 625/1 198), death is under Croall in Coatbridge on the 31 Jul 1939 (REF: 652/02 0320) at the age of 82. Parents Thomas and Ann, wife Agnes m. 1884. The 1907 Agnes record is indeed his wife, of which there are also newspaper articles of her death in the Monkland canal. I found they had 6 children, the first, Mary (Croal) born in 1885 at 4 Poker Row.
The 1955 Edward death is unrelated to this family unit, shows as age 0 as sadly was only 2 months old.
Census details - 1861: 5 Fells Land - Coatbridge/Old Monkland - Croll 1871: 103 Poker Row - Coatbridge/Old Monkland - Croall 1881: Can't find. Parents and younger siblings are possibly at 95 Poker Row - Coatbridge/Old Monkland - Coyle 1891: Long Row - Kilbirnie, Ayrshire - Croal 1901: 32 Carrick Street - Coatbridge/Old Monkland - Croall 1911: 17B/2 Canal Street - Coatbridge - Croal, with 2nd wife Margaret and blended family. 1921: 71G Henderson Street - Coatbridge - Croal
Not related to this war - Edward and Agnes' son Thomas has a couple of interesting service records under the names Thomas Crow and Guilart (mother's maiden name). Thomas' son Thomas was also a Royal Engineer (WWII), my grandmother had to send off his diary before he was awarded any medals. |
