In the London Gazette, issue 24725, page 3541, states:

Interpreter to Lieut-General found wounded at Rorke's Drift 23rd January - statement by natives. 

Never heard of this, anyone????

Eddie,

As someone who knows the descendant Longcast family, his questioning of the wounded Zulu at Rorke’s Drift and the Zulu’s account of iSandlwana are well known.

This is how it is worded in The Supplement to The London Gazette of 15th March 1879: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Longcast a fascinating character and deserves greater recognition.  Through his translation the story of King Cetshwayo kaMpande became public knowledge.
