James Beardmore Despatch rider behind enemy lines?

James Beardmore was born in 1859 in Codnor Park, Derbyshire. He was the son of a laborour James and Jemima Beardmore. He had one sister Elizabeth and in 1871 they were living at Nottingham Road, Codnor.
He was educated from the 8th May 1871 at Codnor Church Of England School.

I can't find a military record for him nor any trace of him in the medal rolls. Being a despatch rider (if true) suggests Imperial Mounted Infantry or he was a colonial.
But behind enemy lines? Suspect

Hi All,
No Military Records, on the census for 1871,1891,1901, 1911, 1921, 1939, he is living at various addresses in or around Nottingham, Working on the Railways, Railway Servent, Carter, Drayman, he marries Alice and have 2 Children. James was born 18 June 1859, Codnor, his death in 1946 was registered in Basford Notts. Codnor is in this District.
