Ordinary Seaman Thomas Broderick was serving aboard HMS Liffey on the Pacific Station when he was transferred to HMS Shah in November 1878 for passage back to England. The "Shah" diverted to South Africa after receiving the news of the British defeat at Isandlwana. Thomas Broderick was landed ashore as part of that ship's contingent to the Naval Brigade. He is confirmed on the medal roll as entitled to the South Africa Medal with the "1879" clasp.
