I thought the last paragraph was stretching it somewhat , referencing the Zulu War , and the Nile Expeditions etc , using the Lance when chasing down a fleeing enemy , those campaigns being 20-30 yrs previous . they surely already knew , and actually stated the battlefield had changed with the advent of Machine Guns , along with Magazine loaded rifles .

Even Elandslaagte which was only 12 years previous was, to the best of my knowledge, the last real successful large scale use of the Lance in that campaign. The Boers called us barberous for using it against their fleeing men.
Above my computer here I have Richard Caton Woodville's 'All that were left of them' 17th Lancers at Modderfontein.
The horses are galloping about wildley and the Lances are discarded at the soldiers feet.
Quite poignant
