Another "Rorke's Drift Hero" - not! Empty
PostSubject: Another "Rorke's Drift Hero" - not!   Another "Rorke's Drift Hero" - not! EmptySat Oct 15, 2022 1:29 pm

Harry Shires served in the Black Watch 1882-85, earning the 1882 medal with three clasps and the Distinguished Conduct Medal for Tamaai. However, two counts of theft led not only to imprisonment but the forfeiting of his medals. After release, he rejoined his battalion and served in the campaign for the relief of Khartoum; this gave him the undated Egypt medal and clasp for The Nile with the appropriate Khedive's Star. He had no other military service accept "at home" in the First World War.
Shires died in Bootle in 1933 and the Liverpool Echo published on 1st February, under the heading "Rorke's Drift Hero" and "Bootle Veteran Buried with Military Honours", a garbled account of his army career. It correctly states that he served in the Black Watch in Egypt and earned the DCM, but also that he was in Afghanistan (he wasn't), that he served under Kitchener (he didn't) and that he served in South Africa. The paper makes the claim that "in the South African War he fought at Rorke's Drift", which, since he was never in South Africa is even more unlikely! Nevertheless, the old soldier received a formal funeral in Walton "with military honours".
