Lieutenant John Chard: What's our strength? Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead: Seven officers including surgeon, commissaries and so on; Adendorff now I suppose; wounded and sick 36, fit for duty 97 and about 40 native levies. Not much of an army for you.

Has anyone come across information (probably photographic) indicating what carbines were actually carried by British artillerymen during the Zulu War? The Martini Henry IC1 A/C was only approved shortly afterwards. My possible contenders are either the Snider Mk III A/C or perhaps a trials version of the Martini A/C which was previously produced in limited numbers.

terrylee,

If the Battery were at its full War Establishment strength of one hundred and seventy-four all ranks.  Only twelve rifled carbines, taking 0.577 Snider ammunition, together with seventy-four 1875 Pattern Royal Artillery Sword-Bayonets were issued.

Unfortunately I don't have any photographs of Artillerymen in the field in 1879 with carbines in my collection.
