South Africa 1877-79 (Zulu War) Medal 2nd Battalion 4th Foot, Kings Own Regiment, medal with clasp 1879, engraved naming “2442 PTE R ROBERTS 2/4TH FOOT”. Robert Roberts a 21 year old Quarryman from Llanfidd originally enlisted into 23rd Foot in October 1876 at Bala. He transferred to the 2/4th Foot in December 1878 which is when the Regiment embarked for South Africa arriving in January 1879. Initially based in Pietermaritzburg, they later moved to Helpmakaar. The companies of the Battalion were distributed in reserve over a wide area. Roberts returned to the United Kingdom in 1883 for discharge having served 6 years and 95 days. On discharge he planned to return to Wales giving his intended address as Red Lion Street Carnarvon. Medal and clasp are confirmed on the roll, 999 medals were issued to the Regiment of which 971 were with the 1879 clasp
