Chards lucky escape Empty
PostSubject: Chards lucky escape   Chards lucky escape EmptyMon Oct 31, 2022 11:28 am

On 7th June 1879 a correspondent writes in the laager at the base of Unyanzani Hill, that there was a Blue on Blue engagement, where Major Chard and Captain Jackson barely came away with their lives.

The Pontypool Free Press 5 July 1879.

I have only ever read about Chard and his actions at Rorke's Drift. Was this ocurance ever written about in any authors works?

Eddie

Yes Eddie
It's in several books , Chard from memory , and others had to take cover behind a rock wall once firing began from the Fort ( Newdigate ) there's a write up in ' Narrative Of The Field Operations Conected With The Zulu War ' , although no names are mentioned , it took place June 6th.

Thank you 90th

Yes, I found the newspaper article that details it all and names Chard and Captain Jackson. The letter published was written the day after the event on the 7th June.
It also says there were four men badly wounded and four missing.
