Film Zulu: Private Henry Hook: Rourke's Drift... It'd take an Irishman to give his name to a rotten stinking middle o' nowhere hole like this.

Hitch and Bromhead Empty
PostSubject: Hitch and Bromhead   Hitch and Bromhead EmptyTue Nov 22, 2022 12:44 am

I have often wondered at the close co-operation during the fighting between Hitch & Bromhead, & of the "nursing" of Hitch by Bromhead after the battle. It occured to me that Hitch may have been Bromhead's batman?. That would explain the connection....any comments?.

I always thought that Gonville Bromhead's orderly was Michael Minehan (or Minihan) - Pte 2-24/1527 - born Castlehaven Co Cork - died 26.5.1891 and buried in the small cemetery there.

You're probably right Kenny, I don't remember reading either way. Thanks.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that Hitch was posted (by Bromhead?) as lookout on the roof of the hospital building to watch the western flank, returned to the front wall defence and was wounded by a gunshot through right shoulder and later he assisted in the evacuation of the patients through the upstairs window - for which his was awarded the VC.
