| With the assumtion you don't just walk into the job as Captain of the DMR I wonder if he was involved in a volunteer unit during the AZW? If I have a moment I might look through the rolls and see if I can find him. |

| Kate,
I’ll check my database - it will be quicker - No Trace on the Medal Roll.
Five entries on the old National Archives of South Africa search engine. Two relate to the purchase of land in 1880. Two others relate to seeking employment, one of which in 1883 he applies for a commission in the Natal Mounted Police. The fifth is sworn affidavit that he had been insulted by a doctor.
A photograph of his broken headstone appears on the Heritage Portal.

| There is also another 24th officer who did not take part in the AZW who stayed in South Africa. He was Superintendent of Police in PMB. Died in May 1893 and is buried alongside Durnford at Fort Napier. His name is William Fraser - served 1863 to 1873 - 24th and 63rd. |
