Can only find a stoker 69274 Richard March on the Tenedos

Richard March, Stoker, who served on HMS Tenedos during the Zulu War was born 16 March 1838 at Plymouth, Devon. He entered the Royal Navy on 2 November 1866 as a Stoker 2nd Class. In March 1878 he was assigned to “Tenedos” which was sent from South America to the Cape for repairs to her engines, and in December 1878 arrived at Durban. The “Tenedos” was sent back to England for repairs and Richard March was transferred to HMS Indus on 24 December 1879. On 6 February 1880 was invalided out of the service. For his service aboard HMS Tenedos during the Zulu War Richard March was awarded the South Africa medal, without clasp. The medal was sent to him on 30 March 1883. His son petitioned the Admiralty for a replacement medal which was refused in 1910.

Comments:
1. Having been born in 1838, Richard March would have been 100 years old at the time the newspaper story was written not 77.
2. At the time of his enlistment in the Royal Navy Richard March was 22 years old, not 15.
3. Since his son had applied for a replacement medal, and was denied, it is unlikely that his medal was in a tin box under his bed.
