Natal Witness 16th August 1879
On the recommendation of Brigadier-General Pearson C.B. and Colonel Welman, a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 24th Regiment has been conferred on Sergeant Joseph Burnett, of the 99th regiment, for conspicuous gallantry during the defence of Etshowe. This is the first commission given away for the Zulu war.
