Companion on the Anglo Zulu War by Ian Knight (A must for anyone interested in the Zulu War) It contains just about everything you need to know. (Great for quick Refrence)

For a Genealogy interest in the Zulu War. It must go to Kris Wheatley for the books mentioned by Old H.

CTSG - Yes I can recommend this book - it covers from the Shaka period through to the early 1900's. I have just checked my copy and see it was originally published in South Africa under the title Rope of Sand which is included in the original list above.

My copy was published in 1997 by Arms and Armour Press - not sure whether it is still in print.

PostSubject: Share and share...   Books of Anglo-Zulu war EmptyThu Aug 19, 2010 3:09 pm

For such a short campaign there is so much material, for those that may be interested here is my list of books:

Anatomy of the Zulu Army Ian Knight
Battles of KwaZulu-Natal Ken Gillings
By the Orders of the Great White Queen Ian Knight
Crossing the Buffalo the Zulu War of 1879 Adrian Greaves
Great Zulu Battles Ian Knight
Horns of the Buffalo John Wilcox
In Zululand with the British Army Charles Norris-Newman
Kingdom and Colony at War J Laband & P Thompson
Last Stand Famous Battles Against the Odds Brian Perrett
Masters of Battle John Wilcox
Rorkes Drift Adrian Greaves
Rorkes Drift James Bancroft
The Curling Letters of the Zulu War Adrian Greaves & Brian Best
The Illustrated Guide to the Anglo-Zulu War J Laband & P Thompson
The Washing of the Spears Donald Morris
The Zulu Kings Brian Roberts
The Zulu War David Clammer
The Zulu War Michael Barthorp
The Zulu War 1879 Alan lloyd
Zulu Saul David
Zulu 1879 DCF Moodie
Zulu Battle Piece Reginald Coupland
Zulu Dawn Cy Endfield
Zulu Hart Saul David
Zulu - The Battle for Rorkes Drift 1879 Edmund Yorke
Zulu Victory Ron Lock & Peter Quantrill
Zulu War - National Army Museum Book of.. Ian Knight

A couple of non fictions in there (and for those wanting a 'Sharpe-esque' read the John Wilcox, Horns of the Buffalo, is great fun if for no other reason than the main character survives Isandhlwana!)

My next target is Blood on the Painted Mountain by Ron Lock as I am looking for coverage of the less well known battles - any other suggestions by anyone..

Wow, thats going to make Saul David happy, someone else apart from his mom bought Zulu Hart. :lol!:
Definite reads are the Emery books, masses of source material and How can man die better by Mike Snook. Otherwise congrats thats a fair collection.
I do hear that 90th has such a big collection his wife sleeps in the garden. Wink

For the siege and relief of Eshowe I would recommend Ian Knight's, "Fearful Hard Times" and " With His Face to the Foe" by the same author for the Prince Imperial incident. In my view the latter is Ian Knight's finest work (although the imminent release of his "Zulu Rising" might well give me cause for re-appraisal!).

"The Battle of Ulundi" by John Laband is quite a nice little "Osprey" size book and worth a punt if you can get hold of a copy.

I would have expected at least one of Ian Knights books if not more. (Is there any reason why Ians have not been included in this collection) scratch

Or are they there, and i have just missed them.
