Hi 1879graves, Noticed the above post - albeit a while ago.. Did you manage to find out any more regarding the original owner as the above is a Guards sword? All the best

Thomas Leigh Hare transferred from the 24th to the Scots Guards on his return from South Africa. So, it could be his sword - pity he did get his name engraved on it.

Noted it is a Henry Wilkinson made item, so the serial number should enable a search of the available records (for a small fee) to determine if the sword was sold to Hare or not. However the etched initials and the date tie into Hare, esp as the etching is in keeping with the Wilkinson etching pattern used in c.1880.

Yes agreed Brin , a Wilkinson made Sword can be traced by their serial numbers , as you also said , Hare having his initials and date etched on to the sword would certainly point to the fact that he was certainly the owner . 90th

Hi 1879graves, A very interesting read, many thanks.. As well as the info on the AZW liked the part about the battle of Tel-El-Kebir and the Suakin campaign as already have a couple of swords once owned and used by individuals who were present at these events. All the best
